Bleeding Heavily

The information below gives you the key steps to helping a child who is bleeding heavily.

Step 1

Put pressure on the wound with whatever is available to stop or slow down the flow of blood.

You are acting as a 'plug' to stop the blood escaping. The pressure you apply to a wound that is bleeding heavily will stop or slow the flow of blood. This will help the blood to clot and stop the bleeding.

Step 2

Call 999.

Step 3

Keep pressure on the wound until help arrives.

Significant loss of blood can lead to a potentially serious condition called shock.
